This book is a case of the appetizer being tastier than the entrée. I preordered it based on the sample which led me, a die-hard Oscar Wilde fan and a fan of classic murder mysteries, to expect a story that would combine clever allusions to Wilde's works with a clever whodunit. Unfortunately, once I got my teeth into the whole book, the Wildean elements soon waned and nothing about the whodunit was clever. The writing is competent, the characterizations are a cut above pasteboard, but the murder mystery plot is utterly lame. The amateur detectives nose around a bit and come up with a handful of suspects with both motive and opportunity. They don't gather further evidence, sift clues or make deductions to identify the killer among their suspects, though. Instead, totally unsure of who the criminal is, they set up a situation in which the murderer is panicked into revealing themself. Not my idea of how a whodunit should be solved. If all you're after is a short, light read, this book will pass with a push, but if you're a whodunit purist, give it a miss.
Alfie McAllister finds himself solving two murders during a visit to his deceased Aunt Gussie's cottage and the quaint village of Bunberry. Alfie has inherited the cottage and is being helped in assimilating to village life and solving murders by his Aunt's dear friends, Liz and Marge. The characters are well-written with a dry sense of humor and English sensibility. I loved them all. The main story involves members of the village acting group, which was wonderfully depicted. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the Cotswolds and the quaint English village of Bunberry and it's slightly eccentric inhabitants!I am looking forward to the second book to see what Alfie and the ladies are up to!
Love this book and I'm going to follow this author now and read everything she writes. When writers mix old (oscar wilde) with modern times, the result sometimes feels a little patched together. This story is smooth as silk, light, charming and smart. The ending was a surprise, but realistic and believable. The characters were awesome, none fitting into stereotypes or what people expect them to be.
I'm a great fan of cosy mysteries and always on the lookout for new series. There are so many to choose from that I've gotten very fussy. Plot, characters and setting. All three must be just right! When the setting is a place I want to visit again and the characters are people I want to see again, if the story is a good one I know I'll be back! As soon as I finished this one, I pre-ordered the next two. I would recommend this series to fans of T. E. Kinsey's Lady Hardcastle mysteries or G. M. Malliet's Max Tudor or Inspector St. Just mysteries.
I love this type of cosy. Never trust little old ladies in a village. Miss Marple times two. I loved Oscar pretending to be a butler on the phone. All the characters were typically village type and enhanced the charm of this cozy. I will be reading the rest of the series.
The setting was interesting. Lots of time spent on setting and character establishment, which is good, but little on the actual mystery. It almost seemed an afterthought and not very complex, sort of like there was a page limit and the author wrote too much before starting the mystery portion of the story. I realize it is only a short story, but seemed unbalanced given the length. It also seems a bit unlikely to me the main character goes by the name Alfie, especially in his professional life. Its hard to take the main character seriously with that name. The book seems oriented toward female readers, though I still read it all and generally enjoyed it.
I don't know where to start, first for short story to introduce 11 suspects near the beginng was confusing at best. The story wasn't all that intriguing to begin with but the herky-jerky style of writing certainly didn't help. The sudden decision to get blind drunk? When we get to unmasking of the killer it was all a rushed job, the epilogue took longer than the Unmasking of the Killer. I'm sorry I can't buy into this little series
I love cozy mysteries that take place in tiny villages, but I was a bit disappointed with this book. There was entirely too much emphasis on who was NOT really a suspect, so it's pretty easy to figure out.As far as the characters go, I'm sure they will be "fleshed-out" more in subsequent books. Not sure yet if I'll read any more, though...
